Ugandan woman Safina Namukwaya births twins at 70

Safina Namukwaya, a 70-year-old woman from Uganda, has made history by giving birth to twins, a boy and a girl, on Wednesday. She is the oldest woman in Africa to have a baby, according to the hospital where she delivered.

The twins were born by cesarean section at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. They weighed 2 kilograms each and were healthy. The hospital announced the news on Facebook and congratulated Namukwaya for her courage and resilience.

Namukwaya conceived the twins through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), a treatment for infertility. She said this was her second delivery in three years, after having a girl in 2020.

However, her pregnancy was not easy. She told NTV, a private television channel in Uganda, that the father of the twins left her and never visited her at the hospital. She said men are afraid of having twins in her culture.

Namukwaya was married before, but her husband died in 1992. She had a miscarriage during that marriage. She started a new relationship in 1996, which led to her having three children with IVF.

She called her twins a miracle and thanked God for blessing her.
