Harry Maguire accepts Mr Isaac Adongo ‘s apology

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has accepted the apology of Ghanaian MP Isaac Adongo , who had mocked him last year for his arrest in Greece.

Last year, MP Isaac Adongo also compared Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia’s economic policies to Harry Maguire’s performances at a time when the England defender was facing heavy criticism.

Mr Adongo, who represents the Bolgatanga Central constituency, had posted a picture of Maguire in handcuffs on his Facebook page in August 2020, with the caption: “Please Man U fans, help me caption this picture of your captain. I can’t think far.”

The post was widely criticised by football fans and social media users, who accused Mr Adongo of being insensitive and disrespectful to Maguire, who was involved in a brawl with police officers while on holiday in Mykonos.

On Wednesday, Mr Adongo apologised to Maguire in a video message, saying he regretted his actions and that he had learned from his mistake.

He said: “I want to use this opportunity to apologise to Harry Maguire and his family for any harm that I may have caused them through a Facebook post I did sometime last year. I have come to realise that it was not the best thing to do and I have taken down the post.”

He added: “I am a big fan of Manchester United and I always wish them well. I hope Harry Maguire will continue to play well for Manchester United and lead them to glory.”

Maguire responded to the apology on Twitter, writing: “Mr Isaac Adongo Apology accepted, see you at old Trafford.”

He also thanked Sky News for facilitating the apology, saying: “Thank you @SkyNews for your help in resolving this matter.”

Maguire has been in good form for Manchester United this season, helping them to second place in the Premier League and reaching the final of the Europa League.

He is also expected to be part of the England squad for the upcoming European Championship, where he will hope to lead his country to their first major trophy since 1966.
