Equatorial Guinea has decided to cancel the friendly match planned against Cameroon, in preparation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, following a disagreement over the conditions of organizing this encounter.
Although Fecafoot, the Cameroonian Football Federation, had never officially announced this match, discussions were underway with the Equatorial Guinean Football Federation to organize a friendly match on January 8, 2024 in Yaoundé between the Cameroonian and Equatorial Guinean selections. A letter dated November 15, 2023 from Fecafoot to Feguifut, the Equatorial Guinean Football Federation, attested to these exchanges.

However, the conditions proposed by the host country for the organization of this match were the source of the disagreement. Fecafoot had committed to take charge of only local transport and accommodation, which the Equatorial Guinean Federation deemed insufficient. The expectation of a more favorable response from Fecafoot having been in vain, Feguifut finally decided to cancel the trip of its team to Yaoundé.

A source close to Feguifut, expressing his dissatisfaction, told Equinoxe: “We asked Fecafoot to do a little more than what it offers for the support, we waited in vain for the answer. It lacked seriousness on the side of Yaoundé”.

Unless there is a turnaround, the Indomitable Lions will have to quickly find a new sparring partner for their traditional preparation match before the start of the AFCON. The technical staff and the players summoned will first meet in Saudi Arabia for the pre-AFCON stage before going to Yamoussoukro on January 10, 2024, where the competition will start for the Cameroonian team.
