Samuel Eto’o fils, the legendary Cameroonian footballer and the current president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), has failed to resign from his position after the disappointing performance of the national team at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
According to a press release issued by FECAFOOT on February 5, 2024, Eto’o offered his resignation to the Executive Committee of the federation during a meeting held at the Yaoundé Hilton Hotel. The meeting was convened to evaluate the results of the Indomitable Lions at the continental tournament, where they were eliminated in the 8th-finals by Nigeria.
Eto’o, who was elected as the president of FECAFOOT in December 2021, also urged the other members of the Executive Committee to follow his example and step down in good faith. However, his proposal was unanimously rejected by the committee, which decided to maintain their current mandates and reaffirm their trust in Eto’o’s leadership.
The press release stated that the Executive Committee appreciated Eto’o’s sense of responsibility and selflessness, but also recognized his vision and achievements in the reconstruction and development of Cameroon football at all levels. The committee expressed its confidence in Eto’o’s ability to continue implementing his plan, which was adopted by the elective General Assembly of December 11, 2021.
Eto’o, who is widely regarded as the greatest African footballers of all time, won the African Player of the Year award four times and played for prestigious clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Chelsea. He also represented Cameroon in four World Cups and won one Olympic gold medal and two Africa Cup of Nations titles with the national team.
As the president of FECAFOOT, Eto’o has initiated several reforms and projects to improve the infrastructure, governance, and competitiveness of Cameroon football. He has also been instrumental in securing the hosting rights for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, which was held in Cameroon.
However, Eto’o has also faced some challenges and criticisms during his tenure, especially regarding the management of the national team and the relationship with the players and the coaches. Some of the issues that have been raised include the selection criteria, the disciplinary measures, the contractual disputes, and the communication gaps.
The poor performance of the Indomitable Lions at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they failed to defend their title and lost to their arch-rivals Nigeria, was seen by many as a reflection of the problems plaguing Cameroon football. Eto’o, who was present at the tournament, took full responsibility for the failure and offered to resign, but his gesture was not accepted by the Executive Committee.
The question now is whether Eto’o will be able to overcome the setback and restore the glory and pride of Cameroon football, or whether he will face more resistance and pressure from the stakeholders and the public. The next challenge for Eto’o and FECAFOOT will be to prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be a historic opportunity for Cameroon to showcase its football and its hospitality to the continent and the world.
