Victor Osimhen is one of the most talented and prolific strikers in the world. The Nigerian international plays for Napoli in the Italian Serie A, where he has scored 56 goals in 91 appearances since joining the club in 2020. He is also the highest goalscoring African in the Serie A and currently holds the record for the most goals scored by an African in a single season.
But Osimhen’s career could have taken a very different turn last summer, when he received a “crazy” and “surreal” offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. The bid was so huge that it would have changed his life and made him one of the richest footballers in the world.
However, Osimhen decided to reject the offer and stay with Napoli, despite the pressure and temptation. He said that he did not want to leave Napoli because he felt the love of the fans and the club, and because he wanted to continue his development as a player in one of the best leagues in Europe.
Osimhen revealed his decision and the details of the offer in an interview with the Obione Podcast, where he said: “It was incredible to win the Scudetto in Napoli. I felt incredible love from the fans, it was unbelievable”.
He added: “I have to be honest, I never thought of leaving last summer as Napoli wanted to keep me. But when the offer from Saudi came in, it was a huge one. Big one… it was difficult to reject”.
He explained: “It was literally like: WOW. It was going to change my life and they never gave up! But I said: no guys, thanks. I’m staying here”.
He also said that he did not regret his choice, as he believed that staying at Napoli was good for his career and his happiness. He said: “I think it was the best decision for me and for my family. I’m happy here, I’m playing well, I’m scoring goals, I’m enjoying the city and the culture. I don’t need anything else”.
Osimhen also expressed his admiration for the Serie A and the Premier League, saying that they are the most appreciated leagues by every African player. He said that he does not have a favourite Premier League team, but he has two jerseys from his brother: Chelsea and Manchester United. He said that many of his friends are Chelsea fans, while few of them are Manchester United fans.
Osimhen is currently one of the best players in the Serie A and in the world. He has won several individual and team awards, including the Serie A Best Young Player award in the 2021–22 season, the Serie A title in the 2022–23 season, and the Member of the Federal Republic honour from the Nigerian president. He was also ranked number 8 in the 2023 Ballon d’Or award, becoming the first Nigerian to make the top ten of the prestigious prize.
Osimhen’s story is an inspiring one, as he showed his loyalty, ambition, and passion for the game. He turned down a life-changing offer from Saudi Arabia to stay with Napoli, where he has become a legend and a hero.
