Early life

Niecy Nash was born Carol Denise Ensley on February 23, 1970, in Palmdale, California. She was raised in South Central Los Angeles by her mother, Margaret Ensley, who was a victim of domestic violence and later became an activist against violence in schools. Nash developed an interest in entertainment at the age of five, after watching actress Lola Falana on television. When she was fifteen, she witnessed her mother get shot by an abusive boyfriend. She also lost her younger brother, Michael, to a school shooting in 1993. Nash attended California State University, Dominguez Hills, where she studied drama.

Career

Nash made her professional acting debut in the 1995 film Boys on the Side, starring Whoopi Goldberg. She then guest-starred in several television shows, such as NYPD Blue, Judging Amy, Reba, Girlfriends, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and ER. She also appeared in the 1999 film Cookie’s Fortune, directed by Robert Altman, and had a recurring role in the medical drama City of Angels.

From 2003 to 2009, Nash played the roles of Deputy Raineesha Williams and T.T. on the comedy series Reno 911!, which parodied law enforcement documentaries. She also hosted the home makeover show Clean House from 2003 to 2010, for which she won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Special in 2010. She also starred in the spin-off series Reno 911!: Miami and Reno 911!: The Hunt for QAnon.

She also played Glenda Cleveland, a neighbour who tried to warn the police about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, in the Netflix miniseries Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022). From 2017 to 2022, Nash played the leading role of Desna Simms, a nail salon owner who gets involved in the criminal underworld, in the TNT crime comedy-drama Claws. She also served as a producer and a director for some episodes of the show. She received a Satellite Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy for this role. In 2022, she also began starring as Special Agent Simone Clark, a former FBI profiler who joins the LAPD, in the ABC crime series The Rookie: Feds.
