Niecy Nash is an American actress, comedian and television host who has appeared in various films and television shows, such as Reno 911!, Clean House, The Soul Man, Claws and Mrs. America. Early life
Niecy Nash was born Carol Denise Ensley on February 23, 1970, in Palmdale, California. She was raised in South Central Los Angeles by her mother, Margaret Ensley, who was a victim of domestic violence and later became an activist against violence in schools. Nash developed an interest in entertainment at the age of five, after watching actress Lola Falana on television. When she was fifteen, she witnessed her mother get shot by an abusive boyfriend. She also lost her younger brother, Michael, to a school shooting in 1993. Nash attended California State University, Dominguez Hills, where she studied drama.
Career
Nash made her professional acting debut in the 1995 film Boys on the Side, starring Whoopi Goldberg. She then guest-starred in several television shows, such as NYPD Blue, Judging Amy, Reba, Girlfriends, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and ER. She also appeared in the 1999 film Cookie’s Fortune, directed by Robert Altman, and had a recurring role in the medical drama City of Angels.
From 2003 to 2009, Nash played the roles of Deputy Raineesha Williams and T.T. on the comedy series Reno 911!, which parodied law enforcement documentaries. She also hosted the home makeover show Clean House from 2003 to 2010, for which she won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Special in 2010. She also starred in the spin-off series Reno 911!: Miami and Reno 911!: The Hunt for QAnon.
Nash received critical acclaim for her performance as nurse Denise “Didi” Ortley in the comedy-drama series Getting On, which aired on HBO from 2013 to 2015. She was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for this role. She also starred as Lolli Ballantine, the wife of a former R&B singer turned preacher, on the sitcom The Soul Man, which aired on TV Land from 2012 to 2016.
Nash also appeared in several films and television shows directed by Ava DuVernay, such as the historical drama Selma (2014), where she played civil rights activist Richie Jean Jackson, the miniseries When They See Us (2019), where she played Delores Wise, the mother of one of the Central Park Five, and the biographical drama Origin (2023), where she played Marion Russell Wilkerson, the mother of astronaut Mae Jemison. She received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role in When They See Us.
Nash also played feminist leader Florynce Kennedy in the FX on Hulu miniseries Mrs. America (2020), which depicted the political movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s. She also played Glenda Cleveland, a neighbour who tried to warn the police about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, in the Netflix miniseries Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022). She received a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Movie/Miniseries and well as Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Primetime Emmy Awards nominations for her role in Dahmer – Monster.
From 2017 to 2022, Nash played the leading role of Desna Simms, a nail salon owner who gets involved in the criminal underworld, in the TNT crime comedy-drama Claws. She also served as a producer and a director for some episodes of the show. She received a Satellite Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy for this role. In 2022, she also began starring as Special Agent Simone Clark, a former FBI profiler who joins the LAPD, in the ABC crime series The Rookie: Feds.

Nash has been married three times. She married Don Nash, an ordained minister, in 1994. They have three children: Dominic, Donielle and Dia. They divorced in 2007. She then married Jay Tucker, an electrical engineer, in 2011. They separated in 2019 and divorced in 2020. In August 2020, she married Jessica Betts, a singer and songwriter, in a surprise ceremony. Nash came out as bisexual and said that she was not “coming out of the closet”, but rather “going into [her] own happiness”.
