In anticipation of the nationwide #EndHungerProtest planned by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday, several members of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Lagos, Edo, and Osun States took to the streets on Monday. Their rallying cry? Hunger and the escalating economic challenges plaguing the nation.
Lagos: A Show of Resilience
In Lagos, the heart of Nigeria’s bustling metropolis, hundreds of protesters—predominantly young people—marched through the Ojuelegba under-bridge area, brandishing placards. The demonstration was organized by the human rights group “Take It Back Movement.”

Despite a formidable police presence, the protesters stood firm, voicing their discontent against oppressive policies and the prevailing hardships faced by ordinary citizens. Their determination was unwavering.
A Call for Change #EndHungerProtest
Juwon Sanyaolu, one of the National Coordinators of the protests, emphasized that this movement was more than a mere gathering—it was a powerful statement of collective will. “The police,” he asserted, “are paid by taxpayers’ money; their duty is to protect us. We successfully marched from Yaba Labour House to Maryland, and our momentum will continue. Tomorrow, we unite with the NLC in a nationwide mass action to dismantle the hardship perpetuated by the ruling elite.”
Police Vigilance and Public Safety
Recalling the stern warning issued by Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, on Sunday, it is clear that law enforcement remains vigilant. Fayoade cautioned against actions that could disrupt commercial activities or impede traffic flow. However, he assured Lagos residents that robust security measures were in place—whether or not protests occurred. Officers and personnel have been strategically deployed to maintain smooth traffic flow and safeguard lives and property.
