Samuel Eto’o Announces the End of Rigobert Song’s Era as Cameroon Coach

Rigobert Song’s contract as the coach of the Cameroon national team has expired today, and it will not be renewed by the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), Samuel Eto’o. This was confirmed by Eto’o himself in an interview with France 24 today.

Eto’o, who is widely regarded as the greatest African footballers of all time, expressed his gratitude and respect for Song, who was his captain in the national team. However, he also admitted that the results of the team under Song’s leadership were not satisfactory, and that it was time for a change.

“He (Rigobert Song) has brought a lot to this team but the laws of football being what they are…” Eto’o said. “We have not achieved our objectives, and our executive board and myself do not see ourselves renewing the contract. I had an opportunity to talk with him about it. I have given our positions and now it’s time to think ahead, while wishing him every success in his future career. Allow me to pay a vibrant tribute to Rigobert Song who was my captain in the national team.”

23 matches
6 victories
8 draws
9 defeats
26 goals scored
28 goals conceded

Song, who is a former defender and the most capped player in Cameroon’s history with 137 appearances, took over the coaching role of the Indomitable Lions in 2022. He inherited a team that was failing to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and helped the team to qualify. He equally qualified the team for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

His mission was to rebuild the team and restore its glory, but he faced many challenges and difficulties along the way. His record as the coach of Cameroon was not impressive, as he only managed to win six out of 23 matches, with eight draws and nine defeats. He also scored 26 goals and conceded 28 goals, which showed a lack of balance and consistency in his team.
